How it Works

Search Expander can expand the search results of any search engine, large or small, whether Google-powered or Bing-powered. Our search engine customers can add just a few lines of code to their search results pages that will automatically read the user's search query and search results and determine whether or not a Knowledge Panel, Instant Answers or other widget is required. If any of these things are required, a data request is made to our servers. Our data will then be seamlessly integrated into the search results page in just a fraction of a second. There are three major advantages to the search engine owner of improving the search experience for their users:

1. Users are more likely to share and recommend your search engine to others and are also more likely to post positive reviews. This, in turn, helps attract more users and drive conversions.

2. It improves user retention and reduces your churn rate. You've worked hard to get users to try your search engine. You want to keep hold of them!

3. Most of the links in our knowledge panels and instant answers trigger another search on your search engine. This keeps users on your site for longer and increases the number of overall searches each user makes. And each new search gives you another opportunity to show the user ads, increasing the lifetime value of each user.

By helping your search engine to attract more users, retain more users, and increase the lifetime value of each user, our hope is that our service will more than pay for itself.

We keep our data up-to-date and are continuously developing and improving on the data that we provide. For most smaller search engines, this would be too big a task to undertake in-house, and may not prove worthwhile. But because we undertake this task on behalf of many search engines, we can do so in an efficient and cost-effective way.

This frees up the search engine owners to do what they do best – market their search engine and promote their cause, whether it be enhanced privacy, a charitable cause or some other unique selling point.

Privacy

Users' privacy is extremely important to us. We don't collect users' search queries. We don't collect users' IP addresses. We don't use pixel tracking. We don't use Google Analytics or any other analytics software. You can read our privacy policy here.

Support for private search engines

Although our standard service is private, we can further support private search engines by offering our data via a proxy service. This shields your users' IP address from our servers, although it adds a small amount of latency to the data request. We also offer GET vs POST requests on all our internal links.

Fully configurable

You can choose the data you want and only pay for the data you receive. So if you have your own weather widget, calculator, timezone answers or dictionary, then you can simply switch these off and only use our knowledge panels. Similarly, you can switch various tabs and carousels on or off within our knowledge panels.

Apart from that, you can modify our stylesheet to suit your site's display, so that our data blends seamlessly with your own. What's more, stylesheet changes can be made client- side, so if your site supports a dark mode, your user can select this option and our stylesheet can be made to change instantly to support your site's new dark display.

In fact, all our options are configurable client-side, so if your user selected POST vs GET requests, chose to disable instant answers, switch off the Wikipedia-based popups within our knowledge panels or made any other changes, these can all be changed instantly client-side. This puts you and your users in full control of our data and how it's displayed.
